8 Wired Brewing Co. Super Conductor Double IPA

How It Looks
At a glance, this looks like your garden-variety double IPA, with an amber orange hue and a relatively tame off-white head (though a more vigorous pour may have yielded better results). It’s mildly hazy, holds its carbonation, and the thin head does a good job of sticking to the glass.

Aroma
Give it a whiff, though, and you know something else is going on. Not too much of that sweet imperial malt aroma; instead you get a nose full of resinous pine and an herbal hop smell something like chive or green onion.  Just a hint of honey is hiding in there too.

How’s the Flavor?
“Aggressively hopped” is an understatement when it comes to taste. Where most big IPAs in America tend toward the sweeter and more balanced end of the spectrum (though not as a rule), the Super Conductor does away with the formalities and gets right to the point with a heavy dollop of piney hops, a herbal onion/borderline spicy flavor, faint citrus and tropical fruit, and just a bit of honey sweetness to round out the rough edges. After swallowing, you’re still left tasting that pure essence of pine coating the tip of your tongue to the back of your throat, making this the quintessential sipper.

The Last Sip
Those Kiwis are definitely onto something with the hop play in this brew. Despite Super Conductor being rather pricey for a 500ml bottle, I’m glad something like this has made it stateside.  The spirit of craft beer is permeating the globe and this is just one example of how breweries outside the U.S. are pushing the envelope and bringing new tastes to palates everywhere.

Unlike some Double IPAs, 8 Wired Brewing’s Super Conductor Double IPA definitely isn’t the beer you would hand someone who claims not to like hoppy beer in an attempt to sway his or her taste buds.  That said, any self-proclaimed hophead will be thrilled by the boundary-pushing hop characteristics of this tantalizing ale, and should seek it out at all costs.

My hop receptors are tingling!
